How can I get connected to the Internet?

In order to connect your LAN to the Internet, you’ll need an Internet Service Provider (ISP). ISP’s offer different types of access to the Internet. With each type of connection to your ISP, there are routers or gateway devices available which allow you to share the connection with other devices on your LAN. Common services include (but are not limited to):

  • PPP connections, which lets you dial up (usually a local call) and connect to the Internet as needed. Connection speeds vary, depending on the modem you have, and the modem pool at the ISP's end.

A modem of at least 28.8Kbps would be recommended. PPP connections usually enable a single machine to access the Internet, but third-party software, such as Vicom Internet Gateway (www.vicomtech.com), is available that would allow everyone on your private network to share that PPP connection to access hosts on the Internet .

  • ISDN, Modem Cables, ADSL, all of which can offer greater throughput then modem connections, but which may not be available in some geographic areas.

  • A leased line (such as a T1 or T3 line), offers higher bandwidth, but also comes at a higher cost.

Check your local yellow pages under "Internet", and call several Internet Service Providers. Be prepared to discuss your needs, your budget, and the level of support you may need from them.
